In the U.S., doctors are required to earn a bachelor's (undergraduate) degree before entering medical school, and this normally takes four years. During the undergraduate education, the future doctor takes a series of pre-medical courses and then an entrance exam, called the MCAT, for med school. However, you cannot actually study medicine on the undergraduate level in the U.S., you can only take the pre-medical classes. Med school itself takes another four years. American physicians earn a graduate degree in medicine, a doctorate in medicine, whereas in some other countries, the degree is a bachelor's in medicine. Following medical school, physicians do a hospital residency for training in a specific field of specialization. Depending on the field, the residency usually lasts three or more years.
