how is the high school in usa

how is the high school in usa?
its just that im curious if its the same as in the movies cause im from another country and my high school isnt the same as in the movies....how is really the high school there..do you have any jocks, nerds, popular, etc... thanks for those who answers..:D

1 :
Yeah there are jocks and nerds. We have cliques like in the movies, but we're not as bad as in the movies. No one does what they do in most of the movies, for the most part.
2 :
I was home schooled so I don't know. I'm only answering cause I'm curious what other people are saying and I want to be able to find this question easily.
3 :
Most high schools in the U.S. do have the different groupings of people like jocks, nerds, etc, but its not as noticable or as bad as the movies show it... movies over-dramatize everything.
4 :
Of course it's not the same. Movies and TV exaggerate everything. At my school, there were cliques. But they weren't super exclusive. If you wanted to be friends with a group of people, you just talked to them. The cheerleaders did not wear their uniforms every single day. The football players didn't throw the nerds into the trash cans. For the most part, everyone was pretty civil with each other.
5 :
Yes there are jocks, nerds, cheerleaders, ect. This can not be avoided because everyone likes different things and the people with common interests make clicks.
6 :
haha. come over and find out :) you can't really learn much about other places unless you actually go there. I've lived in 3 countries and you never know what to expect until you actually go, no matter how much research you do
7 :
All high schools are different, but they really are not similar to how movies and television depict them to be, at least at my school. There are, however, groups and cliques, but most people I know are very kind and accepting.

Philippine high school graduate = USA

Philippine high school graduate = USA?
My son is a recent high school graduate from a catholic school in the Philippines. If we ask him to continue his studies in the US, will he go back to being a high school student again or can he take up any college course? Any link about US education evaluation and requirements would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What he needs to do. If he is a High School Student and wants to go to College in the USA, he will: 1. Needs to contact a school that is authorized by the Federal Government to accept international students. Ergo is authorized to issue and process an I-20 document certifying that he has been accepted and qualified to study in that institution. 2. During the application correspondence, the institution will send you an application packet. This will guide you on the application process. for further readings on this topic. Go to www.uscis.gov and click search on the topic F1 visa. But if you want to fast track things, go to www.zoni.com. Its an english course that is accredited to issue I-20 for F1 Visa application.

what is a junior high school in USA

what is a junior high school in USA?

1 :
do you mean "Middle School"?
2 :
it would be a secondary school in other countries. Primary = Grade School; Secondary = Middle School or Junior High School; Preparatory = High School.
3 :
I think I know what you are asking.... maybe You go to elementary school either K-5 or K-6 Then it branches off to either middles school or junior high. Middles school is 6-8 and Junior High is 7-9 So obviously depending on where you took elementary school, you will go to eithe a middle school or junior high. Then high school is either 9-12 or 10-12. Then you have the option to go to college wich is 1-8 depending on how long you stay of corse.
4 :
Junior high school is grades 7 through 9. Middle school is grades 6 through 8. Please Answer Mine? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AguPg336BvWLoyNFplYchDbZ5nNG;_ylv=3?qid=20090707134332AAxcIzS

6 :
Do you mean MIDDLE school? Well it's really lame, people are very judgmental in middle school, and in middle school everyone thinks if you don't wear preppy cloths your a loser. But in a nutshell it's super lame. I hated middle school. High school is so much better, people don't care what you wear. I love high school.
7 :
American junior high schools (7-9) were created to give elementary school students a bridge to senior high school. Junior high schools are structured like senior high schools - organized into academic departments. The junior high school concept traditionally was not collegial or personal enough for student advancement. Middle schools (6-8) were created to allow teachers to work in 'teams.' The idea was for a team of teachers to share a group of students. The team would collaborate on assignments and activities. Most importantly, the middle school student was expected to benefit from the arrangement as the teachers communicated with each other about the student's strengths and weaknesses.

5 :
A school is only what you make of it. Some can offer more resources than others but it ultimately depends on wether you take advantage of it or not.
6 :
Top 3? That depends on what you consider top? For different programs, different schools around the US are better. For example, Reed College in Portland Oregon refuses to take part of the U.S. News and World Report rankings. They are considered to have some of the best intellectuals in the country there. MIT has a much better computer science and engineering school than Harvard or Yale. Once again, it all depends on what you consider to be "top."
7 :
What a ridiculous and stupid question. The correct answer is to do some research in your field of interest and determine what the best colleges are for you. But that would require work, and you're not up for it. So yeah, Harvard and Yale. And pick Princeton. Sure.

Depressed about my results. Please provide a solution! Any grad school in USA consider student with less GPA?
I'm studying Electrical Engineering as a major and have my minor in Computer Science in Canada. However, I haven't done well in my engineering or computer science and I will be graduating with a GPA of mere 2.4 this coming May (2011). I remain very depressed as I doubt if I'll be able to find any job. My parents are asking me to consider grad school but I don't know if any grad school in USA will even consider my application because of such weak GPA. Please any help advice as to what I should do? Thank You.
Studying Abroad - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
In the United States we have the lowest GPA requirement for graduate schools in the developed world, 3.0 (a handful of schools have lower ones, but they are not worth International tuition to attend). Unfortunately you will have to get your grades up if you want to attend graduate school. The easiest way to do this is by looking at your lowest grades, F's and WF's and take the course over again, if your school has a grade replacement policy (US schools do). Once you graduate you will be stuck with that GPA for the rest of your life, so take extra time in school now, even if it means graduating later, to get it up.
2 :
Have you done an internship or co-op in engineering? If not, then even if doing one would delay your graduation, you MUST do one. Because while some employers will care about your GPA, most won't even ask about it - what most employers care about is that you got your engineering degree and did the internship. So you really, really need that internship. I would prefer that you do that internship, and also work with the career center to make your resume sparkle. Use all that to get your first engineering job. Work there for a while, establish a record of success, and only then consider grad school. So for right now - internship, then a full focus on getting your first engineering job. You absolutely can find an engineering job. Again, most employers (not all, but most) won't care what GPA you got. Really. Honest. There are some grad schools that might let you in, if your GRE ends up being strong and you have full time, post-bachelors experience as an engineer. You may also want to consider taking the professional engineering exams - that could also help you.

At the school where I teach, the after school detentions are 45 minutes long. And there are many different ways to earn a detention. Hope this helps. :)
2 :
when i was in school...it was an hour. at the end of the year...you could trade them in to get paddled. 2 licks per detention. my fried took 22 licks over a 3 day period. :(
3 :
idk...my school doesn't have after school detention. but my teacher makes ppl stay if they get in trouble until like 7 or 8
4 :
I was only suspended once. For skipping a class, ONE TIME. I got 3 days out of school suspension which really doesn't make sense since I was just missing more of the class. It was French and I had a A in there. It seemed a bit harsh to me. I don't know if people do after school suspension anymore in high school atleast.... not at the school I went to.
5 :
well each school is different ive done 3 sat. with my son for slamming some punk up againts a locker the punk grabbed his girl friend crouch and got nothing
6 :
Not long enough i say with the brats that are in this country today. oh and i for got to mention if the get detention, their parents should receive detention in jail also for the offenses of their children. parents need to be held accountable for the actions of their children. and the government and children services need to stop interfereing in the parenting of children nowadays. what is wrong with beating a childs ass for doing something wrong. they do the crime the deserve the punishment. spare the rod spoil the child remember this saying. more beatings would mean that this world wouldn't be in such a f***ed up state like it is in today. oh and i also beleive in capital punishment none of this life in prison crap. I don't want to pay to have someone sit on death row for 30 years just waiting to die. I say if you did it and you are found guilty you don't get a second chance to prove your innocence. just sit in the chair and let me flip the switch and watch you fry.
7 :
Most American teachers really suck at classroom management, so they get rid of the kids by sending them to the office; the office gets rid of them by sending them to detention. But, hey, school's all about teaching and secretarial positions. T'hell with the kids.
8 :
Ours are either 30 mins or an hour. ALso have 1 hour or 2 hours on Saturday. Really depends on the offence.

MAJORLY IMPORTANT: how can I go to school in USA? 10 points

MAJORLY IMPORTANT: how can I go to school in USA? 10 points!!!?
Hi guys, I'm a 16 yr old girl from England, basically I hate living in this country and I've wanted to move to America to live with my cousins out there (in PA). At school I'm in Year 12 (thats 11th grade) and I'm taking my A-Level exams but I've heard they don't exactly mean much in USA so I need to take the SATs exam to get into an American college/university. For A-Levels I'm only doing 4 subjects (Psychology, Biology, Classical Civilization, and English Literature). I used to take 12 last year for my GCSEs but I can't remember much about Physics, Chemistry or French etc. so I'm worried that I'll be expected to know these for the SATs. Is there anyone who knows a thing or two about the exam and what subjects exactly we are tested on? Thanks in advance! :) <3

4 :
To study in US college after high school, normally you need to take the SAT I and 0 to 3 SAT IIs depends on the college or university you are interested in. While A-level courses may enhance your college application, they are not required for college admission. You may go to the admission website of any US university to get the sense of the requirement such as SAT scores, GPAs, recommendation letters, or any college application essay. For a general understanding of SAT content, format, and score distribution, you may go to website of http://www.northstarelearning.com/sat1 and check the "SAT introduction" online video course. While most of the top US universities require SAT score for college admission, some universities (most of them are community colleges) do not require SAT. The best approach is to contact the university you want to get in and ask for more information about the admission requirements.

hi
3 :
First of all.. your chances of getting in with a 2.8 into any of the schools is probably below 10%. Now, getting in without a bachelor's degree is probably below 1%. There are a couple of optometry schools that will let you in without a bachelor's degree, but most of them are now requiring one. The GPA of entering optometry/dental student is around a 3.5 and above. Med school varies, but it is typically higher.

Sure, but in the US you need to apply to each college individually. Once you are accepted you apply for a student visa and you are good to go. The only catch is that you need to bring plenty of money as you need to prove that you can pay your tuition and living expense.

What do you think of high school students in USA

What do you think of high school students in USA ?
are they well-disciplined or not ?

1 :
There are many good students, however there are a lot of disrespectful, undisciplined punks. They are not well disciplined. Principles, school boards, and parents are to blame, but they like to blame teachers. These children fear nothing.
2 :
As with anything else, it depends on the individual student, as well as the particular school. My son attended schools which had very little difficulty with discipline; others aren't so lucky. With that being said, I can add one thing; I think US public schools do our children a HUGE disservice by not teaching subjects which explain our place in the world. They have almost zero education in geography of either our own country or the world at large. There is little study of current state, national, or world events. Students fail to learn standard English, to read a complex paragraph, or write a coherent sentence. Just Google video of "dumb Americans"; even Harvard professors don't know where Saskatchewan is! Our idiot president can't keep "Austria" and "Australia" separate in his own mind, nor "APEC" and "OPEC". Neither can he pronounce "nuclear" properly, and he went to YALE!! Sick.

How I do Know which school (elem/Middle/High) my kid should go to

How I do Know which school (elem/Middle/High) my kid should go to?
We are searching for a new home and I found it difficult to understand which schools a street address is zoned to. Is there a website, where I can just punch in the street address and it tells me the elem, middle, high school where my kid should attend ? I found that some school district websites have these information, but they are limited only to that school district. I think, what I am looking for is a site that should give information for all (or most) of the schools in USA or for me, atelast in TX.

Path to getting to medical school in USA

Path to getting to medical school in USA?
Let's say I want to become a pediatric oncologist in the USA. I did my IGCSE, and will soon do IB(International Baccalaureate). I heard IB is very prestigue, and i will get everywhere where i want thoughout the world if i get good results. Does it mean I don't have to do SATs when i have IB? Also, I dont really understand going to college before medical school. If i done IB, and i am well prepared, whats the point. Do i have to? Can't i just do the exams that i need to do and go? Also, what's next. Thanks.
Higher Education (University +) - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Even if you do IB, many schools still require the SAT/ACT (but don't weigh it as heavily as they did in the late 90s). Unlike the UK and places like South Africa and Australia, the US, Canada, Japan and Taiwan etc require you to have a bachelors degree before you can enter medical school. So just because you don't understand why you should go to college is irrelevant because it is mandatory for admissions to medical school in the US. It does not matter what you major in in college so long as you meet all the prerequisites for medical school admissions (ie: necessary math, biology, chemistry courses). You will have to have a bachelors degree and take the MCAT exam. Good luck
2 :
Each school in the US has it's own requirements, there is no national standard for which tests can be used for admissions. In the US, Canada, and a few other places, you have to have a bachelor's degree to be admitted into Medical school. Getting your bachelor's degree in the same country that you want to attend medical school will increase your chances for admissions. In other places, Medical School begins with basic coursework in biology, chemistry, etc. In the US, Medical School skips the basics, assuming that you've covered that in your pre-med classes, and begins right with advanced Medical Subject Area work. Unless you've taken college level Biology and Chemistry you are in no way prepared for US Medical School.

Is that true that students at American public high school in USA use drugs

Is that true that students at American public high school in USA use drugs?
I heard the story a long time ago, and have believed until now. I heard the drugs is illegal in our country, but not in the USA. It may be a marijuana, or something like that. Actually, I do not distinguish any illegal drug's name and have no knowledge of it. However, I have considered it that provided it was a true story, none of their parents do not want their children attend the school because it seems not going to learn things, but going to play with or use drugs. It is very dangerous! It means even the public school fee is free, only a few students attend to it. I wish anybody answers who attended or attend a public school in the USA.
Primary & Secondary Education - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
What are you saying? if the question is (is it okay to use drugs in schools) it is not. Drugs like marijuana are illegal in the USA, however that does not stop people from using them. There is a drug problem in some schools across the nation, however it is still illegal.
2 :
Most children in the USA go to public school. Some (usually older students) experiment with drugs just as they experiment with sex. In the USA Marijuana is used by a lot of older students ages 15-18 usually. Marijuana IS illegal in the USA but in some areas of the country it is becoming legal for several reasons. Some students also experiment with other more powerful drugs such as cocaine (White powder), mushrooms, and acid.
3 :
I went to public schools and have never used drugs. So did my sister. So did most of my friends. It's just like any other school... some kids use drugs and some don't (and the ones who do usually are not stupid enough to do so on school grounds). The vast majority of students in the US attend public school, regardless. Private schools are expensive, and most of them are hard to get into (mostly because they have a limited number of openings)... and since education is a legal requirement for minors in this country, public school or home schooling is the only option available to 90% of the population.
4 :
Sadly it is true. I have stumble upon a student, a classmate of mine, who is sophomore, and was high because he smoke weed. Sometimes, you are able to smell them or find them lying on the floor. You will also find some smoking or doing drugs in the restroom, disregard of age. However, not all does it. Some do, some dont. It is just the choice to do it or not.4C
5 :
Most high school students, whether in the U.S. or Canada, will experiment with drugs at some point. I don't think it's a problem isolated to American high schools, but the thing to remember is that it's a small percentage of students who continue to use illegal drugs, and end up hooked for life. The majority may use drugs a time or two, then decide that it's not for them.

the states of texas and florida have the toughest and most competitive high school football leauges in america, and therefore, the most heavily recruited by college scouts. you'd have to choose what city you plan to live in and then contact that cities chamber of comerce maybe. then it would depend on where in the city you moved to as to which public high school you'd be put in. unless you wanted to go to private school, then you'd just contact that school directly. the first thing to do is to choose a city, then you can get all the info you need about that cities school districts and the high school football programs in the area.

Call them on a telephone.

If you are indeed a US citizen they really, all you need to do is to stay with a US relative and go to high school in their community.

yeah, you can go to a private school, or claim permanent residence at wherever you would live and go to that public school. But you would be transferring halfway through your high school career, which may be difficult because of how different the UK's school system is from the US's. You shouldn't have any trouble signing up for school though, since you are a citizen.

Is the application form for CUNY same for students currently attending high school outside USA and inside

Is the application form for CUNY same for students currently attending high school outside USA and inside?
Hey, I was looking in the CUNY site about application for students currently attending high school outside USA and I found this page http://www.cuny.edu/admissions/undergraduate/prepare/outside.html Then i went to the 3 paragraph where it says "Review our instructions for high school seniors " but after this the page forwarded me to the page for high school seniors AND here is the problem i scrolled down where it says "download the Application Worksheet for High School Students" when the new page opens in the pdf format it says it is for students currently attending in usa high schools. So now i cant find a proper form for students currently attending high school outside usa thanks politically but now which application should i use the same i referred on the top ,i mean the form that USA high schools students fill?First of all i care about filling the prepoer form and then about the visas and etc Edit number 2: i went to the list for international students -students currently attending high school outside USA and then i had the problem i decribed on the top. Now for the degree i am thinking of studing chemistry and biochemistry in queens college and then apply for medicine as my cousin did ( I have my uncle to insure the loan i will take after college).Well is that degree so worthless? i don't know then. I cant afford going to private college Edit 3: First of all i would like to thanks you forr answering me again and again:) well,as i told you my cousin studied biochemistry and chmeistry in queens and then went on to medicine which he is studing right now.I have a house at queens and there would not be much expenses on food....so i just calculate the fees which is like 50,000$ for 4 years or something and about 200,000 in medicine. In uk is it necessery to do a major for example chemistry in order to study medicine and also if you count the tuition fees and personal expenses for housing and stuff would it be more?

Don't worry, CUNY does not turn away any applicants. It is considered a 'non selective school' with all that that implies for the degree you will get. You will need to fill out some additional sections to apply for your student visa if you are not a US resident or citizen. This will require you to submit your financial data so that they can see you can afford the fees and will be able to feed and accommodate yourself in NYC which is not the cheapest city in the world. Currently studying Masters at City College. Edit: go to the section for international students and see the list of forms there. I remember having to 'translate' my UK degree into a US style GPA so I don't think there was a separate form. To be honest, they really take everyone that applies and can pay. If they ask for an SAT score obviously you must sit the SAT first. Errmm you do know that the degree is going to be quite worthless don't you? Edit2: If you want to read Medicine you would be nuts to consider an American university. You can read Medicine as an undergraduate in the UK but in the USA it is a post-grad course. Besides, it will be even harder to get into Medical school in America than it would be in the UK so you run the risk of spending four years and $120,000 only to find that you cannot get in anywhere.

How can I enter the medical school in USA

How can I enter the medical school in USA?
Hi. I am a Korean student who is about to enter the college in the Philippines. But I wanna go to the medical school in USA after I graduate here. I have 1 week to choose a major. There are 'biology', 'nursing' and 'medical technology' for the premedical course here and 'medical technology' major is one of the most popular, hardest and best subject here and I'm qualified to all the majors here. Is 'medical technology' bad in America? If I choose a proper major, What other things can I prepare for entering the medical school in USA? Please help me... TT I heard that I need to study in USA or Canada at least 1month. Does it mean that I need to transfer the school in undergraduate school? If it is, what shall I do? Please help me... I will do my best. I heard that I need to study in USA or Canada at least 1month. Does it mean that I need to transfer the school in undergraduate school? If it is, what shall I do? Please help me... What can you tell me about High School in USA

What can you tell me about High School in USA?
Hi guys, well i'm gonna write a book. It will take place in USA (exactly in New Jersey), so I need a bit infarmation about high school in USA, cos it's complitely different from italians. So... How long do you go to school? From september to june? I know that students often atten lessons until the afternoon... so you go to school from ? in the morning to ? in the afternoon? I've never understood, for example you have some schoolmates in the english class, but then you go math class and change schoolmates? The last question: you attend the first year at 15 and the last at 18? If you can say me something particular... write me! Please, answer... it could seem a stupid quest, but it's important to me!

its harebell it gos on forever and its about 7 45 Minuit classes
2 :
yup september to june (some may even go august to june) my high school starts at 7:13am and goes to 2:10pm they mix up the classes so people have chances to meet more new people with the same interests at themselves most people are 14 entering high school and 18 I'm only entering high school for the first time next month but from my knowledge I know that it's a great way to make friends and prepare for your future, also my high school is a "Park" because it is 3 schools and people go to all of the schools, not just one, so its very unique =]
3 :
1. School usually goes from early September until early to mid-June. Some schools start in late August. 2. I go to school from 8 AM until 2:40 PM. Of course, many students have extracurricular activities/sports after school that last for a few hours. And then usually between 1 and 5 hours of homework when you get home. 3. Every day in my high school we have 6 separate classes. Each class lasts about an hour, and you walk to a separate classroom for each class with 6 minutes of passing time between each. Because everyone else has a divided schedule like this, you can have different people in every class, but usually some of the same people have the same classes with you. For example, my first 3 classes might be Spanish, Chemistry, and History, respectively, but Susie's might be Psychology, Chemistry and English. So Susie and I would be in Chemistry together but not the other 2 classes. 4. It changes depending on what state you live in, but where I live you start your freshman year when you're 14 or 15, and you graduate when you're 18. Good luck on your book!!
4 :
let me just start by saying americas school system is very messed up, and our government isnt doing anything to fix it. ive gone to public schools all my life. okay, so elementary in some places goes from kindergarden (about 5 years old) to 5th grade, (about 10-11) but my state's elementary goes up until 6th grade, then jr high for me went from 7th grade (13 yrs old) until 9th grade (15yrs). so for my state, highschool goes from 10th grade (about 16 yrs old) to 12th grade (about 18). but for most schools they start highschool at 9th grade and go until 12th. and my school starts from 8 in the morning, until 2:30 in the afternoon. my school is on something called a block schedule. where we have a total of 8 classes. and theyre split up, so we have 4 classes each day. the classes last about an hour and a half i think. we get a half an hour for lunch after the second class of the day. and we get 5 minutes inbetween classes, to get to our next class. we all get to choose the classes we want to take. we sign up for those classes the previous year. for each class, the students dont stay the same, because everyone has different classes. what happens, is each teacher just teaches one subject, the same lesson all day. they stay in the same room. and the students move classes. so theirs a different teacher and different classroom for each subject. so the students that are in your class change because everyone has different schedules.. um, i dont know what else there is. and sorry if you already knew a lot of that, i just wasnt sure what you already knew or not. oh, and my school starts in mid august (next monday) and ends on the last day of may.

How do I get into a school in the USA

How do I get into a school in the USA?
I'm in Australia, but am moving solely to the States. I would like to further my education, but know nothing about it? What information is needed? Do I need legal guardians? Do I need a green card? I am 16, and this is what I have decided =) Any information, websites, etc. will be greatly appreciated!! Cheers Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if your going to live in the country im 99% sure you will need a green card. You cant really live on your own her as your not an adult in the eyes of the state till 18. and you have a fucking awesome name... its the reason im answering your question.
2 :
I would start by finding a school you're interested in attending. You can do this by researching on the web. The University web sites always end in .edu - So when you find something on a search engine, you can click around on sites like that. When you actually find out you like, you can always come visit to make sure it's where you want to be for four years or longer. You can also have the schools send you information packets and applications. I don't think you would need legal guardians, but you would need a green card that I think would be good until you graduate or stop going to school. The college I went to had tons of students from China and Africa, that come over here for school. If you're looking for something smaller with a beautiful campus, and lots of activities on campus, so you wouldn't need a vehicle, you should check it out! They give a lot of scholarships also. They also have residential colleges, with classes in the dorms, and honors college, if you're looking for more of a challenge. (Just a place to start looking)... :) Good luck!

Reentry to USA from Canada with violation of Status in record but reinstated to F1 and still go to school

Reentry to USA from Canada with violation of Status in record but reinstated to F1 and still go to school...?
i have been going to school in US for 5 years now, 4 year ago i had a problem with school cause i was dropped from a class by mistake and when out of status. i had t apply for reinstatement, i asked some fiends and they told me to talk so some dude, his wife is an immigration lawyer. i went and talked to his but he asked me to work for him for couple weeks to cover one of his employees meanwhile he can talk to his wife and help me do reinstatement. However, things did not go right and i was picked up from his place working this after working only one day with him. i was put in removal procedure for working out of campus which i haven't had knowledge of at the time. All what i knew is that we can work during summer time after a year going to school in USA. i got my status back as F1 student 3 months later but i m still in the removal procedure until this day because the case is not closed yet. i went to talk to the immigration office about it and all what i got from them is that my case is not in the system but there is always this removal procedure thing because my reinstatement was from CSI and need to be approved by a immigration judge. i m still in my F1 status since then and never had any prob with school but i want to leave US for couple weeks to Canada but my visa just got expired 2 weeks ago. If I leave to Canada with my expired Visa, my I-20 and my I-94, can I come back under The Automatic Visa Reevaluation process or will I be refused the reentry to USA again to finish school?? Thank you

If you haven't obtained a residency in three years I would have to surmise that your USMLE scores were not competitive. Since the only assessment of skills and knowledge that a foreign trained student can offer are the USMLE scores, the scores need to reflect a level of competency expected on a US trained student. You have options. You can repeat the USMLE exams, but I wouldn't advise trying that until you've taken preparatory courses, such as Kaplan's or the Princeton Review, anad successfully obtained high scores in the practice exams. If your USMLE Step One was low, you could consider attending a Caribbean school to retake the Basic Sciences. If your Step 2 exams were low, you could probably join a Caribbean schools' Clinical Rotation. You last alternative is to repeat medical school in its entirety--but you have to attend a US undergrad university for at least a year and meet all of the US school eligibility requirements.

Well, preschool would be 3 or 4..sometimes parents use it as daycare..normal kindergarten starts at 5 providing the child turns 5 before November and if not then the child would start the following yr, which is not always fair because they are only 2 months behind the class. Some schools have all day school such as my sons first school..in kindergarten he went from 7am till 1:20 pm..but then we moved to a different city and he only went from 7:30am till 10:50am..they had whats called, morning or afternoon classes.

Try pizza or a hamburger and some hotdogs and chips. Try some coca cola too! French fries too. anything that is greasy will do for american food. lol. Pizza Well i am sure you know but get some dough roll it flat and put some tomato sauce on it with motzarella cheese and peperoni and what ever else you like for toppings. for the hamburger get some beef make a patty fry it and put it on a bun with ketchup tomato lettuce onion. Hotdogs are pretty easy. Chips you can buy in a bag i am sure and the coke too. for French fries get a potato skin it and then slize it in to long thin rectangles then throw them in to hot cooking oil until they are done. You can also do a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a Bacon lettuce sandwich too.

Hmm, interesting. How about southern US cooking. Like jambalaya, grits, collard greens, creole anything? Or California uses avocado in about any sandwich or meal. Texas and Kansas it's BBQ ribs and there are many kinds of dry rubs and mops. For the midwest it's all steak and baked potatoes and corn on the cob with tons of butter. Kentucky has a special regional dish called Hot Browns. I can't describe that one without looking it up again. Hope this helps!

Our "American cuisine" consists of a variety of things, because we are a country with many people from many countries! Living here my whole life, it is unfortunate to say most eat a lot of unhealthy foods. Fatty, fast food, etc. Thanksgiving is a holiday we have remembering our founders. They cooked turkey and bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, pies...things of that nature. It varies from each family and each part of the USA.
9 :
Might I recommend a pot roast w/ veggies or a good ole fashioned roast beef w/ mashed potatos and string beans

Southern Fried Chicken Recipe courtesy Paula Deen Show: Food Network Specials Episode: Paula's Cooking Class House Seasoning: 1 cup salt 1/4 cup black pepper 1/4 cup garlic powder Southern Fried Chicken: 4 eggs 1/3 cup water 1 cup hot red pepper sauce 2 cups self-rising flour 1 teaspoon pepper House Seasoning 2 1/2-pound chicken, cut into pieces Oil, for frying, preferably peanut oil To make the House Seasoning, mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months. In a medium size bowl, beat the eggs with the water. Add enough hot sauce so the egg mixture is bright orange. In another bowl, combine the flour and pepper. Season the chicken with the House Seasoning. Dip the seasoned chicken in the egg, and then coat well in the flour mixture. Heat the oil to 350 degrees F in a deep pot. Do not fill the pot more than 1/2 full with oil. Fry the chicken in the oil until brown and crisp. Dark meat takes longer than white meat. It should take dark meat about 13 to 14 minutes, white meat around 8 to 10 minutes serve with mashed potatoes and country gravy, green beans and for dessert apple pie. http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_31775,00.html?rsrc=search or choose any of these recipes from country kitchen http://www.acplace.com/#recipebox

Well, I can recommend one dish for you that is local to my area. I grew up in Beaufort County, South Carolina where there is a popular dish among locals known as Frogmore Stew. It isn't very widely known in the US, in fact if you go as far north as North Carolina, people haven't heard of it. And NO, there isn't any frog in it as most American tourists from other states ask when they hear it mentioned. Frogmore refers to a place in the area. It mostly contains sausage, corn and potatoes. It's pretty tasty, if you like stew. You would serve it with a side of cornbread, a popular menu item across the US South. Here's a link to the recipe as well as some other Lowcountry recipes: http://www.co.beaufort.sc.us/bftlib/frogmore.htm#Stew Hope this helps! I just thought of something else. If the stew doesn't sound good, you could make any number of Cajun dishes from New Orleans. I love food from there because it's usually spicy. Jambalaya is a good one: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/easy-cajun-jambalaya/detail.aspx

Here a two recipes for you to make: Chicken Fried Steak I "Breaded and deep fried beef cutlets are known as chicken fried steak because of the similarity in cooking method to fried chicken. This is a family recipe that we have used for years. Vegetable oil may be used in place of shortening for frying." Original recipe yield: 4 servings PREP TIME 15 Min COOK TIME 30 Min READY IN 45 Min INGREDIENTS 1 pound boneless beef top loin 2 cups shortening 1 egg, beaten 1 cup buttermilk salt and pepper to taste 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1 quart milk salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS Cut top loin crosswise into 4 (4 ounce) cutlets. Using a glancing motion, pound each cutlet thinly with a moistened mallet or the side of a cleaver. In a large, heavy skillet, heat 1/2 inch shortening to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C). While the shortening is heating, prepare cutlets. In a shallow bowl, beat together egg, buttermilk, salt and pepper. In another shallow dish, mix together garlic powder and 1cup flour. Dip cutlets in flour, turning to evenly coat both sides. Dip in egg mixture, coating both sides, then in flour mixture once again. Place cutlets in heated shortening. Cook until golden brown, turning once. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels. Repeat with remaining cutlets. Drain grease, reserving 1/2 cup. Using the reserved drippings in the pan, prepare gravy over medium heat. Blend in 1/4 cup flour to form a paste. Gradually add milk to desired consistency, stirring constantly. For a thicker gravy add less milk; for a thinner gravy stir in more. Heat through, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve over chicken fried steak. -----DESSERT----- "Apple Pie" 1st Prize Winner . Filling 6 tart apples (Granny Smith, Jonathon or Pippin), peeled, cored, sliced 2/3 cup granulated sugar Water 2 T. cornstarch 1 T. butter 1/2 tsp. cinnamon Pinch of nutmeg Combine apples, sugar and 1/2 cup water in a large skillet. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then cover and cook 5 minutes. Dissolve cornstarch in 1/4 cup water in a small bowl; stir into apple mixture. Bring to a boil, then cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in the butter, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cool. With mixer at low speed, beat in the flour and pecans. Press dough into a 10-inch pie plate and refrigerate 10 minutes. Topping 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. ginger 1/8 tsp. mace 1/4 cup cold butter, cut up Combine flour, pecans, brown sugar, cinnamon ginger and mace in a medium bowl. Are college degrees from other countries valid in USA

Are college degrees from other countries valid in USA?
I've always wondered if students that decided to go to college/university outside of the USA could find employment in America or if they got into grad school in USA. Also, what if a student who got his bachelors in USA decides to go to grad school in Canada, if he returns to USA, will his master of science be valid in America?
Higher Education (University +) - 6 Answers

I'm not quite sure, but generally, I don't think so. My dad had a masters in some sort of science when he lived in Asia, and it doesn't seem to help him that much...he's an accountant...
2 :
i think it does and for the first poster im sure his degree did help him in terms of being an accountant I know my friend is from Africa and he has a teaching degree and he was able to take classes at the graduate RN level here so yeah it depends but it wont hurt also if youre bilingual in Asian/Spanish it doesnt hurt
3 :
They have something called accreditation www.abet.org It depends on your field of study and if there is a licensing exam or not. The reason for the accreditation issue is money and to protect US higher education institutes survival.
4 :
I think yes but there is a VERIFICATION PROCESS of it which is very tough...
5 :
It depends on the subject of the degree and which university it came from. Do you think anyone cast doubt on Bill Clinton's degree he got at Oxford? Degrees in medicine need to be as good as US ones, before a foreign doctor can work here.
6 :
Because the US is so much larger than most countries, it can afford to ignore the standards other countries use to measure achievement. It depends on the employer.

Who thinks religion and parayer should be allowed in USA schools

Who thinks religion and parayer should be allowed in USA schools?
It's not going to kill anybody if religion and prayer are in schools. I think it shold be allowed. I'm talking about private and public non religion schools.
Other - Education - 15 Answers

1 :
I agree.
2 :
I think all people including children should be allowed and encouraged to pray in what ever manner they see fit.
3 :
Absolutely. If someone doesn't have that same religion, they have the right to not participate, but not the right to say they can't do it just because they aren't of the same faith.
4 :
I think they should concentrate on spelling. I remember prayer in the schools and how we had to say Our Father every morning, which is a Christian prayer. About 1/3 of the class was Jewish but we had to say it anyway. Whose prayers would you suggest? Christian? Jewish? Muslim? etc. etc. What about agnostics or atheists? Should they be forced to pray?
5 :
Yes, it's about time we started examining the mythology of the dark ages as party of history.
6 :
Yeah. Public schools preach evolution, so why not other religions?
7 :
Yes, to bad my kids can't practice"FREEDOM OF RELIGION" I need to add that, everyone who seems to think they can practice religion in school. Well where I live, you cannot take a bible to school, wear a shirt that says "JESUS ROCKS" anything religious is not allowed in school, that is just sad.
8 :
Religion and prayer are already allowed in public schools. You can pray any time or any place you like, as long as you do not disrupt the class. Unless you want to force others to pray also, is that what you are asking? Why dont we force everyone to pray together? Or teach your religion as fact? Then it becomes an infringement on OTHER peoples religious freedom. You have the freedom to follow whatever religion you want, but I also have the freedom NOT to follow your religion. As far as student led prayer - you have to look at the situation. Is the audience required to be there? Is attendance mandatory? If so, then even student led prayer is not allowed, such as at a graduation ceremony or class meeting. If attendance is not required, such as at an after school religion club or prayer group, then student led prayer is fine. No one is forced to attend.
9 :
I think that religion and prayer should be allowed in public and private non religious schools. I know that our school system allowed these two things when I was in school and nobody minded. Nobody felt like they were forced to take part and nobody WAS forced to take part. You just sat quietly at your desk and listened. If you didn't want to listen to the Scripture reading, you could think about anything you chose such as what you were doing that day after school or what you were going to plan to do that weekend and nobody would know that you didn't listen to the Scripture. However, if you listened to the Scripture reading, you always learned something new. This was partly why I always listened and I found the readings very interesting. After this came the prayer which was led by the teacher and then after this came the pledge to the flag. Then we started with our classwork. Nobody objected and neither did our parents. It wasn't such a big thing; it just WAS. Everybody understood that. Our country was founded by men and women who believed in God and we were honoring them (our founding fathers and mothers) by listening to the Scripture and the prayer and the Pledge to the Flag.
10 :
yeah i suppose it's pretty harmless if someone prays at recess or by their locker. as long as a teacher is not spouting that garbage. obviously it's fine to cover it in any class that it applies to. it's weird that god doesn't really feel like you're addressing him unless you do that weird hand signal.
11 :
Honestly (and I am very religious, faithfuil person), it doesn't really matter to me. I think that religions should be taught for awareness and tolerance. As far as prayer, as far as I know, no one can stop you from praying on your own (I always prayed before every test) & there are clubs (such as fellowship of Christian Athletes) where believers can come together. A whole group prayer time is covered in most school districts by the "Moment of Silence" after the Pledge.
12 :
Notice that the asker of the question said allowed, not forced on children. I think it should be allowed but not forced on children. If a child wants to pray, let them pray. I consider that part of the freedom of religion. Teachers or school faculty should not force the children to pray. School faculty led prayers (forced prayers) should not be allowed, however student led prayers (voluntary) should be. The other students may have to listen to the prayers, but that is part of the freedom of speech and religion. And since the student is leading the prayer it is separation of church and state. I remember when I was in high school. There was a court ruling that it was against the law to lead prayers at school even if student led. They threatened around our local area that any students that led prayers at their high school graduations would be encarcerated and put in jail. I will never forget the large showing of police that showed up at my high school graduation ready to handcuff and cart off anyone who participated in a student led prayer at graduation ceremonies. This happened at many other high schools around my local area. My class president and class vice president both led student prayers at my high school graduation, knowing very well that by doing so they might be handcuffed and put in jail. Most of the students followed in prayer. Many other high schools defied the order also in the same kind of situation. No one was carted off for praying, but the tension was definitely there. If they had carted people off to jail, I would have considered my country no better than China as far as religious tolerance.

Not me. Religion has no proper place in any government-sponsored arena, lest we find ourselves on a slippery slope to a state religion. And that would be an abomination. The courts have done well at keeping religion out of government -- and government out of religion.

Religion and prayer are already allowed in schools. What you seem to be talking about is giving schools the power to force people to pray and engage in religious training, which clearly violates the first words of the First Amendment by tending to establish state-sanctioned religious denominations. If children want to pray, they can pray in school without interference, as long as they don't create a disturbance; any administrator who interferes with them will be breaking the law. There is a difference, which you apparently need to think about, between allowing people to act freely and forcing them to act as though they share your beliefs.

So you won't have a problem with a pentagram being drawn on the floor of your school so that those who call satanism their religion can pray to their god. Or the native american mud hut so they can indulge in peyote while offering their sacred prayers to their god(s). Maybe you're only talking about Christian prayer and not Catholic prayer where some diocese still cross themselves when they pray, or wiccan ceremonies requiring candles or burning of clothing, or voodoo religious prayer that requires the blood of certain animals to consummate the prayer. Wow, I don't know where you go to school, but it would be difficult to get much done around just the various Christian rituals, let alone those who are of the Jewish faith, or Islam. I'd say no. We need to keep religion and state seperate. Do you not see Iraq, or Iran, or Israel, or Turkey or Lebanon, or any other nation that doesn't seperate.

Julliard. Its like a school where music and acting thrive. Look it up on google :)
3 :
There are a ton for each but you have to choose one or the other if you are serious about it. They are both totally time consuming. *Btw, in Juilliard you can only choose one major. Either acting or music. Don't get your hopes up of attending this school I think they take 7 or 9 actors in the the program each year. This is a link to a juilliard music student (piano). You would have to play this well to get in. (Although he does have a pleasant voice, he is not a vocal major.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnRA_MFlGek

Are you a U.S. citizen? If so, there are a couple programs that support students like you. You can use Stafford loans to study overseas, for example, if the school is accredited.

Should foreign languages be made compulsory for elementary and high school students in the USA

Should foreign languages be made compulsory for elementary and high school students in the USA?
Do you think that America should follow the lead of so many of the countries in Europe and make second language learning compulsory?

I think it should be done after elementary.Just to increase our ability to understand other people. The ability to speak and understand another language can/may help to avoid misunderstandings which is the general cause of conflict. It also enriches the life of those who can speak and understand another language.
2 :
A second language helps one view life through the eyes of another culture. It expands the mind's ability to think in ways that are impossible in one's own language. It also convinces a student that other languages can be learned just as easily as the first. It is sad that there is so little interest in foreign languages and cultures in the United States. Truly educated people enjoy expanding their minds to their limits.

i don't think so. at this point there is no practical reason for the majority of americans to learn foreign languages, as english is currently "the" language to know and many many many foreigners speak it. and as a language major i'd rather not have a bunch of other people acquiring my skills and making me less marketable =) no but seriously, learning a foreign language is a fine thing, but it should not be as high on the priority list as other subjects, such as math, science, economics, history, or simply the ability to communicate well in english. too many students, and adults for that matter, lack a basic understanding of these subjects for us to be worrying about foreign languages. besides, these subjects will always be useful, while changing world conditions mean that a good language to learn now may not be so useful in ten years. how do you handle choosing the languages to teach if you make it compulsory?
4 :
Of course. We seem to tend to think the world revolves around us, we don't teach our kids the metric system, which every other country uses, and don't bother to teach our kids a second language, which just about everywhere else starts teaching in primary school. I didn't even have the option to until high school. And it's proven it's easier to learn another language when you're yonger. America's losing a lot of their work ethic. Look at Japan, China, and just about everywhere else: it's not about the sports teams, it's about education. If only colleges and the like were as competive as in Japan, for example, maybe the focus would shift.
